Naples Pizza Italian Restaurant is a welcome addition to Xiamen. We should be grateful that Gennaro has decided to come to Xiamen. It's a restaurant where the Italian ingredients come from where they should come from, Italy. The olive oil in fact comes from Gennaro's own family business back in Naples. Even the brick pizza oven is from Naples! The lamb is from New Zealand and the beef from Australia. What vegetables they don't grow themselves, they purchase fresh and locally. The restaurant has two floors of seating, with a full bar on the second floor. They are open 7 days a week. 11-midnight during the week and 11-2am during the weekend. They offer free delivery within 5km. The phone number is 553-1518 or 553-2518. Their address is Rm. 108. Jiayi Building (嘉益大厦). No. 162 Jiahe Rd. Siming District. A new kind of pizza comes to Xiamen Beijing Wenzhou  - Naples Pizza

Xiamen is blessed with many good Italian chefs and restaurants. So you might ask, 'Why do we need another one'? Well, first let me say you can never have too many good Italian restaurants. Second, Naples Pizza Italian Restaurant is unlike any of the other Italian restaurants in Xiamen, it has true Naples pizza. In case you didn't know, Naples is believed to be the home of pizza. The famous Margherita pizza was named after Queen Margherita after a visit to Naples. The restaurant opened only a few months ago by partners Gennaro Miele (from Naples of course) and local business woman Jessie Dai. Gennaro is also the Chinese representative of the Naples Pizza Chef Association (Sponsored by the city of Naples) that was set up to keep the authenticity and define what it means to be an authentic Neapolitan pizza. The following four basic guidelines are what make their pizza official: (And they have a copy of the certificate in each menu to prove it)

1. A wood-burning oven: The pizza must be cooked by wood. Gas, coal or electric ovens, while they may produce delicious pizza, do not conform to the tradition.
2. Proper ingredients: Type 00 flour, San Marzano (plum) tomatoes, all natural fior-di-latte or bufala mozzarella, fresh basil, salt and yeast. Only fresh, all-natural, non-processed ingredients are acceptable.
3. Proper technique: Hand-worked or low speed mixed dough, proper work surface (usually a marble slab), and oven temp.
4. Review: Final review by the designated representative of the association assuring that the ingredients, technique and final product conform to the tradition.

Gennaro is also an owner and a partner in two locations in Beijing and one in Wenzhou. So you can feel good knowing that there is already much experience behind the new Xiamen location. Gennaro is a typical Italian restaurant owner. You will always see him walking around talking and laughing with the customers making sure everyone is happy and enjoying themselves. However, he lives in Beijing, so sadly he may not always be around when you visit. But do make sure to say Hi to pizza Chef Luca Nania!

So let's get to the pizza. It comes in two basic sizes, 33 and 50 cm. (about 13 and 20 inches for us Americans) However, you can also order a giant 100 and 150 cm pizza! (40 and 59 inches) There are 32 different types available on the menu, but the most famous is of course the Margherita. So that's the one I started with. The oven is located right up front so you can watch your pizza being made if you want. Pizza Chef Luca Nania will be happy to talk with you while he makes your pizza. His English is good, though he will need help with his Chinese as he's from Italy. He's seems to love his job as both times I was there, he always had a smile on his face. It doesn't take long to cook your pizza and my Margherita arrived in about 8 minutes. This was no doubt what a true Naples Margherita is. The crust had a nice crispy and tender feel with a fragrance of the wood fire it had just come from. The tomato sauce had a fantastic fresh taste and the pizza overall had a rich, full flavor. To eat this pizza you can use a knife and fork. However, for me it's all about the hands!! Wait about 2 minutes for it to cool a bit, then take a slice and fold it over. I also tried my very first pizza marinaro. As basic as pizza gets and not what most people accustomed to American style pizza would expect. No cheese or toppings. Just the full flavored pizza sauce smothered on that excellent crust. Simple, but oh so yummy!

Pizza is not the only thing you can get here though. You can find pizza's cousin, the calzone. Basically a stuffed pizza, in that the ingredients are stuffed into a pizza dough turnover that is baked in the wood-burning oven. I had a calzone stuffed with spicy sausage and very good ricotta cheese that was baked to perfection. Since it is a true Naples restaurant, you won't find lasagna, ravioli, and other more famous Italian dishes. What you will find is some other good pasta dishes though. I had a tasty seafood penne pasta dish with fresh seafood and a zesty sauce. I also had something else I had never heard of before, Baci Del Golfo (Kiss from Naples Gulf). These are made from the pizza dough and are small cylinder sized items. They can come stuffed with meat, cheese or vegetables. Very tasty and filling.

Sadly I never got around to the risotto, made from Italian imported Carpi Arboria, or any of the 12 different salads, all are which are made in the separate salad kitchen which you can see in the back of the restaurant. I was lucky to try 3 of the desserts available. Except for the tiramisu (one of the best in Xiamen), they are all Naples desserts. I had a wonderful creamy migliaccio made with ricotta cheese that was not to sweet and a flourless paprese that was so rich in chocolate, I was wishing for a glass of milk.
